Site characteristics

Boin River Forest Reserve is located in western Ghana, bordering Côte d’Ivoire.The site was declared a Forest Reserve in 1932. The terrain is hilly, with swamps in the valleys, and the vegetation is transitional between moist evergreen and wet evergreen forest that is mostly undisturbed- about two-thirds of the reserve have not been logged (BirdLife International 2022).

Ape status

A rapid survey was conducted at the site in 2009 in the context of the Wildlife Wood Project in Ghana, which aims to assist logging companies in improving wildlife management in concession areas (Gatti 2009). No chimpanzee signs were detected during the survey.
